Riordan joined Maschio & Soames in 2021 after completing a master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham and a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at the University of Bath. He has since gained experience in the drafting and prosecution of both European and UK patent applications. Riordan enjoys prosecution work, critical to the process of getting patents granted and has worked on many cases from tobacco genes to medical devices such as cartridge-based lancets.
During his studies at Birmingham, he developed an interest in orthopaedic implants and researched how different materials, coatings and technologies can impact antimicrobial resistance to suggest ways that deep-lying infections can be prevented. At Bath, he researched how using proteins from bacteria can help produce novel therapeutics centred on the platelet-leukocyte interaction. Moreover, as part of his Bath degree, Riordan spent a year working at the University of Plymouth as a neuroscience researcher and co-authored a paper on the role of Slit3 in cell migration and axon pathfinding after nerve trauma.
During his spare time, Riordan enjoys playing Water Polo as well as going for swims and runs. He also loves to travel and often couples this up with his passion for scuba diving.
